Plus ultra is a montage of analogue film- and video footage and results from a research that already started in 2015. The film deals with the subjective perception of supposedly objective history and tells a fragmented, non-linear story that spans from the ancient myth of Heracles to habits of the aristocracy in the Renaissance to a childhood in (post) GDR and beyond.

Not further beyond – non plus ultra was a motto of the ancient greeks who located the end of the world at the Strait of Gibraltar. With the transgression of this ancient end of the world the Conquista and subsequently the globalization kicked off.
Plus ultra – further beyond became the motto of this new era in which a new mythological character superseded the narrative of Heracles – the Cowboy.

The film sheds light on how the narrative of transgression is inscribed in images and the visual culture of our daily life and why this is very much connected to our economy.
